The Common Application (commonly called "Common App") is the most widely used college application platform in the United States. Over 1,000 colleges accept Common App, which means you can complete a single application and send it to multiple colleges — saving significant time and effort.
Which Colleges Accept Common App?
- All Ivy League universities: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell
- Top-tier private universities: Stanford, MIT, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory, Notre Dame
- Liberal arts colleges: Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona, Wellesley, Bowdoin
- Some public universities: UVA, UNC-Chapel Hill, William & Mary, Georgia Tech
Main Sections of Common App
5. Activities
This is one of the most important sections. You can list up to 10 extracurricular activities, but quality over quantity matters.
Strategic tip: List your activities in order of importance, not chronologically. Your #1 activity should be the one where you demonstrated the most leadership, passion, and impact.
Focus on impact, not just participation. Specific numbers and outcomes matter.
6. The Personal Essay
The Common App personal essay is your opportunity to showcase your unique voice, personality, and perspective. You'll choose one of seven prompts and write a 250-650 word essay. Most students write close to the 650-word limit.
Common App Timeline
Summer Before Senior Year (June-August)
- August 1: Common App opens for the new application cycle
- Tasks: Create your account, complete basic sections, start brainstorming essays
Fall of Senior Year (September-November)
- September: Finalize your personal essay, complete the activities section
- November 1: Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA) deadline for most colleges
Winter of Senior Year (December-January)
- January 1-15: Regular Decision deadlines for most selective colleges
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting until the last minute: Start early. Technical issues happen.
- Not proofreading: Typos and grammatical errors can hurt your application.
- Reusing essays without personalizing: Every supplemental essay should be specific to that college.
- Forgetting to request recommendation letters early: Give your teachers at least 4-6 weeks' notice.
Remember: Common App is just a tool. What matters is how you use it to tell your unique story. Colleges aren't looking for perfect students — they're looking for authentic, thoughtful, passionate students who will contribute to their campus community.
Don't navigate Common App alone. Strategic guidance can help you present your strongest possible application.
